Logan Nye Named NYSID’s 2023 Outstanding Performer
BATH, NY – Logan Nye was recently named New York State Industries for the Disabled’s (NYSID) 2023 Outstanding Performer at their annual meeting in Schenectady, NY. NYSID’s Outstanding Performer Awards Program celebrates those who have overcome individual challenges to experience meaningful employment on NYSID Preferred Source contracts.
How appropriate that Logan Nye was honored as October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. At a time when workers with intellectual disabilities experience a 64% unemployment rate, NYSID Preferred Source workers are in control of their futures. The NYSID Outstanding Performance Awards Program says it best – A job can change everything. It provides economic stability and personal growth. It helps shape our lives, create security and form relationships.
Logan was diagnosed with Dystonia, a form of Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy, at age 3. He had difficulties with balance, walking and fine motor skills. Involuntary muscle contractions and irregular posture caused persistent pain and fatigue, affected his speech and created cognitive delays.
Logan was awarded an IEP diploma in 2007 and stayed on at BOCES until he turned 21. In 2009, Logan enrolled in Day Habilitation Services at the Arc Steuben. He worked diligently on the soft skills necessary for employment. He was proud of his paycheck but dreamed of the ultimate level of independence – his driver’s license. According to Logan, “People thought it wouldn’t be possible, so I had to convince everyone that it was.” After working with a rehabilitation driving specialist for over three years, he received his license, the proudest day of his life.
Director of Business Operations Christopher Koehler said, “Logan has dealt with challenges most of us could not imagine. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams against all odds.”
On Wednesday evening in Schenectady, 50 individuals were honored as the Class of 2023 winners including our own Logan Nye, selected as the 2023 NYSID Hall of Fame Honoree. New Yorkers with disabilities working on NYSID jobs earn their way as contributing members of their communities thanks to Preferred Source employment opportunities. The NYSID Preferred Source Program was created in New York State 48 years ago to empower individuals with disabilities through employment. The Arc Allegany-Steuben has enjoyed a long and positive relationship with NYSID, dating back 38 years.
